The Australian Outback

Australia’s population mainly condenses along the coast and most of the inland is barely inhabited and for a good reason: the Australian Outback is a harsh environment. It’s hot, dusty and unforgiving. Long drought periods shake hands with devastating floods and to etch out a living amongst the red soil takes a special kind of people. Isolation, self-sufficiency, lack of access to easy schooling and medical care and a special kind or loneliness greet the brave pioneers living amongst a sky of stars so near you feel you can pluck them down with your hands. Every now and then a city slicker goes to visit the Outback, bringing home tales of hardship but also joy and fierce pride.
People of the Outback: I salute you!
