Today's lunch at Maison Jeunet at Arbois, (2 Michelin Stars) was terrific. Chef understands that you can never overshadow the hero ingredient with too many distracting flavours. Great wine list, including a great selection by the glass, fabulous, friendly, non-pompous service and great value for money. The only complaint I have is that in my opinion the servings are too large. 😊

Last night's dinner at IMA (Japanese for NOW) in Rennes was edgy, incredibly daring for France and very contemporary. Chef Julien Lemarié knows his craft and leads a tight brigade which dances quietly to his unspoken commands. They are using seasonal produce and it's French / Japanese. Chef worked in Tokyo for 5 years. Service is flawless, wine list is small but a perfect match for the food, (note: no beers, ciders or pastis, but they have @michterswhiskey ) and the space and atmosphere are great. Best dish: 'Oeuf de Poule, foin, nori', which is a very fine oat porridge with citrus and seaweed and it reminds me of 'Halim', an Iranian dish of wheat with the addition of a very soft poached egg and seaweed.
If you're in Rennes then check them out but you'll need to book a few weeks in advance.
